On Saturday, March 22, many of you came to take advantage of the advice provided by theAssociation of Apple Eaters of the Champagne Plain : in total, 65 participants during this day and sunshine!

Two workshops were offered at the Maison du Parc in Pourcy. Pruning, which took place in the conservatory orchard, and grafting, which was carried out in a prepared area.

The pruning brought together several groups around the Apple Munchers, who explained the correct actions to follow in order to take care of the fruit trees. It is important to observe your fruit tree carefully and cut off most of the shoots or branches heading towards the inside of the tree., at their base. The participants were then able to practice with their pruning shears, under the watchful eyes of the association's volunteers.

The transplant has aroused a lot of curiosity, most of the participants having never been introduced to this practice. It involves cutting the end of a branch on the tree whose variety you wish to reproduce (for the quality of its fruits) and putting it in contact with a young “rootstock” tree selected for its resistance to disease and its future height at maturity.

Different techniques exist, depending on the fruit species and the time of year. After a demonstration by the apple-munching professionals, participants purchased the variety(ies) they wished to take home to practice grafting themselves.

If you would also like to discover the correct techniques for pruning and grafting in the orchard, come next year to the conservatory orchard at the Maison du Parc in Pourcy!

In the meantime, Find lots of information on fruit trees, their maintenance and propagation in the practical guide “Creating and maintaining an orchard”.

The engineering and actions are co-financed by Europe via the FEDER, the State, the Grand Est Region and the Marne Department as part of the Green and Blue Network Action Program 2023-2025
